The Cyrus M. Running Gallery begins in the skyway that connects the Olin Art and Communications Center with the second floor of the Frances Frazier Comstock Theatre building.

Placeholding

is a multimedia artist whose creative work addresses social issues in media like printmaking and hand papermaking. Through satirical inspection of quotidian materials and objects, her work wryly addresses questions of gender, multiracial identity, and social privilege.

Hoyer has been recognized by organizations including the , the , the , and Brown University’s .

Her artwork is part of collections including the Museum at Texas Tech University’s Artist Printmaker Research Collection, the Association of Pinoy Printmakers, Philippines, and the Museu da Gravura de Curitiba, Brazil. Hoyer is based in Northfield, Minnesota, where she is an at Carleton College.

In the exhibition “Placeholding,” Hoyer examines the changing landscape as a metaphor for belonging and place. Through inspecting her local landscape in southeastern Minnesota, prairie and oak savannah, and her personal relocation to Northfield, Minnesota, from Denver, Colorado, to southeastern Minnesota, Hoyer’s work engages in the narrative/mythos of both local and invasive flora.

What does it mean for plants, or humans, to belong to a place? Using media including printmaking, installation, and drawing, Hoyer interprets this landscape, its unique species, and its changing light over time and place. She explores a sense of place and the intricacies of where we attempt to fit in.

Re-situating the Displaced

Lela Pierce was born and raised in rural MniSota Makoce — the ancestral and current homeland of the Dakota and Anishinaabe people.

She has danced extensively with as a founding member (2004-2016) as well as and Pramila Vasudevan of Anichha Arts (both 2015-present). In 2018, she was awarded a for visual art through the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her work has been presented internationally in India and Sweden (including a solo show at Kalmar Konstmuseum) as well as at several Twin Cities venues.

Pierce holds a Bachelor of Arts in studio art with honors from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a Master of Fine Arts in interdisciplinary art and social practice from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She is currently a Jerome Hill Artist Fellow and teaches sculpture at Macalester College.

Investigating parallels between human and plant ecologies, this work takes a look at invasive species — specifically buckthorn in our Minnesota landscape.

What language, attitude, and actions do humans take in response to populations that are perceived to be out of control? What are our duties and practices as citizens of an expansively interconnected world to find balance, respect, and belonging to coexist?

High School Art Show

This juried art exhibition showcases the diversity and creativity of student designers and artists from North Dakota and Minnesota high schools.

This year’s juror is Professor Emeritus of Art Heidi Goldberg. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1990, and her Master in Fine Arts degree in printmaking and works on paper at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1993.

She taught studio art at Å·ÃÀÊÓƵ from 1995-2022.

Her works have been exhibited in local, regional, national, and international juried exhibitions. She lives and works in the sandhills near the National Sheyenne Grasslands in North Dakota.

Faculty Art Exhibition

This annual exhibition features the recent work of Concordia art faculty: Ross Hilgers, Jess Matson-Fluto, Chris Mortenson, Dr. Danielle Gravon, and Dwight Mickelson. Faculty members work in a variety of media including clay, oil, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition

This juried art exhibition showcases the diversity and creativity of Å·ÃÀÊÓƵ’s student artists.

This year’s juror, , was born and raised in New York Mills, Minnesota. His affinity for drawing and comics brought him to Concordia where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in art and communications.

After a few stints in Minneapolis, Connecticut, and Wisconsin he returned to the Fargo-Moorhead area where he now lives with his lovely wife and three busy children.

He is currently an illustrator and graphic artist for .

He has taught at Minnesota State University Moorhead as an adjunct professor, and he produces work on commission. In his home studio, he enjoys creating screenprints. His work is exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the region. You can also see his work at .
