Though the speech program is a part of the communication studies and theatre art department, you do not need to be a communication major to participate in the speech team.
Being on the speech team refines your ability to speak publicly, research thoroughly, think critically, write argumentatively, and listen intently — skills that are invaluable to your success as a student and to any discipline or career.
Every Cobber speech participant has graduated within four years, usually with an impressive GPA. Many of our alumni have become lawyers, politicians, and educators, and they call out their speech experience as the best preparation for their professional life.
Concordia's speech team has won the Minnesota Collegiate Forensics Association Tournament 19 times in its 33-year history. Beyond state competition, Concordia's team has also consistently placed in the top 20 at the American Forensics Association's National Individual Events Tournament, with an incredible fourth-place finish in 1991. On the individual level, our team has garnered six national championships at the AFA-NIET, two AFA-NIET All-Americans, and more than 90 state individual championships.
While the teams' primary activities are competitions, its members are active on campus, in the community, and throughout the region. Concordia's speech team hosts a collegiate speech tournament and various high school workshops.
