Greta Almlie ’24, Moorhead
Majors: Business Management, Communication Studies
Please tell us about yourself.
My name is Greta Almlie. I am currently a sophomore at Concordia pursuing a double major in business management and communication studies. I was born and raised in Moorhead, where I participated in speech and theater in high school. When I am not too busy, I like to hang out with my friends or go down to visit my family in Arizona.
Why did you choose to transfer to Concordia?
I chose to transfer to Concordia for many reasons; however, those reasons weren’t always so prevalent. Growing up, I knew I wanted to get out of town for college. Being a Concordia student never even crossed my mind, as I had practically grown up on campus because my mom worked here for almost nine years. After touring many colleges around the Midwest, I decided to commit to UND. Then, COVID-19 hit. My first semester at UND wasn’t anything like all the fun freshman stories you hear about. It was a lot of sitting in my dorm, as no classes were in person and not many in-person events were happening on campus. While I don’t regret my time there, I just knew it wasn’t the school for me. During that year, I toured Concordia and the college immediately clicked with me. I loved the connected campus community, the encouraging professors, and the opportunities for getting involved. After my tour, I immediately got started with working on how to transfer. Now, here I am, and I love college.
What activities are you involved in?
On campus, I’m the lead digital marketer for the Campus Events Commission (CEC), I’m on the student development team for Students and Alumni Linked Together (SALT), and I’m a member of the Presidential Search Committee. Off campus, I’m a coach for the Moorhead High School speech team and a sales associate at Scheels in Fargo.
How did you decide on your majors?
I have always really liked people and communication studies focuses on theories of how we interact with each other. As I have gotten older, I have found myself intrigued by the business world; thus, that is where business management comes into play. I also knew what I didn’t like, which helped me decide on my major.
How did you get involved with the Campus Events Commission?
CEC is one of the main reasons why I transferred to Concordia. While at UND, I saw that CEC was still trying to safely bring the campus together through events. I was eager to join this year because the previous year I didn’t have many opportunities to go to events and connect with others. I also knew Moorhead High School grads — Lance Morlock, Sophia Klindt, and Ariana Grollman, who I was in theater and speech with. They gave me some insight into what they did and why I should join.
What is something you look forward to in your role as the lead digital marketer for CEC?
In my role, I always look forward to informing and connecting the campus community. Since getting the position in December, I have loved taking on the challenge of a good way to do that. All the events we host are awesome, but we must inform others through publicity resources or those events simply can’t happen. Coming up with marketing strategies/outreach is what I love about my role.
What is your favorite part about being in Students and Alumni Linked Together?
There are a lot of things I like about being in SALT. Perhaps one of my favorites is connecting with the students who are in it. They are all so intelligent and outgoing and it is fun to just talk with them while planning events. I also like to connect with alumni and see their involvement with the campus community even though they aren’t students anymore. It is inspiring to see that this college has so many alumni who are willing and able to support the students.
Have you had a PEAK (Pivotal Experience in Applied Knowledge) opportunity and, if so, what did you learn?
I have not had a PEAK opportunity yet, but I do have one this summer. I will be a retail merchandising intern at the Scheels Corporate Office. I just got word that my internship will be counted toward a PEAK. I am super excited for that experience.
Have you had a favorite professor or class and why?
Due to transferring, I only really have had one year with professors. However, I have loved Leann Wolff and her Ethics and Leadership course. That class always got me thinking in creative ways and was just overall super interesting. I loved having Leann as a professor because she was spunky and made sure she connected with all the students in the class. I have loved many of my professors, as they have strived to get to know everyone in the class and have pushed them to excel academically.
What advice would you give to a student considering Concordia?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to me or any other Concordia student to ask questions — or come to campus for a day. It is so worth just checking it out and seeing what Concordia is all about!
