Details for MLK Day are listed under the In This Section dropdown menu above.
Every year on the third Monday of January, the Concordia community comes together to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We do so not only as a reminder of King’s personal achievements but also, and more importantly, as the opportunity to engage the entire community in thoughtful and informed explorations of issues that define King’s life and legacy — nonviolence and direct action as tools for social change, altruistic love as the basis of the beloved community, the courage to stand up for truth and justice regardless of the consequences, and an unrelenting resistance to oppression and exploitation.
As we commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we try not to limit ourselves to simply celebrating the life of a civil rights leader; rather, we want to ensure that we’re, in fact, following in his footsteps, that we are doing our part in the ongoing struggle against violence in all its myriad forms, particularly against what King himself identified as the “three major evils of society,” i.e., racism, poverty, and war.
MLK Day is planned by a committee of students and staff. Students on the committee are representatives of the Student Government Association, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission (DEIC), and students committed to racial justice on campus. If you’d like to reach out to someone about the day for questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to the advisor of the committee, whose contact card is listed below.
